We're talking about everything from the more commonly-known Jules Verne and H.G. Wells to more obscure works/authors such as Theologius Autodiactus. Maybe even True History (or A True Story, depending on the translation) by Lucian.

I admittedly haven't read particularly much sci-fi from before Asimov and Clarke revolutionized the genre. I'd have to say H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds was rather influential to the genre as a whole, and it's one of the few that I've actually read from that time period, so that's what I'm going with here.

Oh yeah, birm, you forgot that other one written by that author, where the main character does thing, and that other character did that other thing, and the setting was that place with the thing.

I'm back a couple years later having read more books and I'm going to change my answer to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom series.
