What is the proper way to indent a novel?

'Cause APPAAAAAAAAAAAAAARENTLY paragraph line-spacing isn't considered acceptable by literary publishers, and only for 'online writing' and ebooks.

And all this googling I've been doing about indents has been really stressing me out. Too much lingo I don't understand.

I wasn't asking for HOW to indent, but how to PROPERLY indent. How long should the indent spacing be? Should it be a left-right indent or a right-left indent? When should you place an indent and where should you not?
