At my college, you have to take at least two semesters of English for your general education courses. I am finishing up my gen eds this semester, so I am doing a gothic/ horror literature class (which has been amazing so far btw) for my English credit.
There is a foreign exchange student in there that I know. He is from Japan, and I am assuming that he has to take an English class for similar reasons. His English is overall good, but he is definitely still learning, and he has expressed to me how difficult this class is for him because of him not knowing enough English yet. I told him I wanted to help him in anyway I can, but I can't help but to feel that he might be afraid to ask for help.
What do you think my options could be here? Because ofc, I can't force anyone to receive help, but if he's struggling I want to do something for him atleast, y'know. But that's another difficult task, what could I even do to help him? I know Japanese at an intermediate level right now, but definitely not enough to translate stories. And also, the way the class is structured makes it a bit more difficult because it requires participation. You basically have to read A LOT and talk in class about what we read. I try my best to include him in conversation by asking him his opinion about the book we read or themes so that he's not left out. But I also don't want to come off as annoying or even patronizing in anyway.
Help lol

Having worked a student staff position at a local community college, I have to ask if your college provides tutoring services (From my understanding, most in the US do)? There might be some uneasiness asking friends for help as he may start worrying about intruding too much on your personal time, so it may help him feel more comfortable asking an impersonal party for assistance with reviewing his work. Also check to see that if there are tutoring services that they may be willing to do a group session between him, you and some of your classmates. Hopefully, it may help him figure out ways to be able to communicate his thoughts more comfortably in the class during these talks.
That being said, there's not really much else I can say, having never met him before. Still, I hope things work out!

I'll look into the tutoring programs, and see what I can do there.
