I'm interested in maybe trying to set up my own website on a personal home server. I don't quite know what I'd do with it (if I'd known how to do this in 2015 I'd have set up a website like "bannanachair.com" for us instead of proboards); I guess I'm more interested in just going through the process of setting something up. Maybe I'd put some personal projects on it; I don't have a ton going on in my life right now to blog about, but I'm sure I could think of something at some point.

Well, first off you'll need to find a server host like GoDaddy and register/pay for an unclaimed domain name. It's a yearly/monthly subscription, just so you know. Not just something you pay for once & own, but I don't think it's more than like $15/year.
I don't know a thing about HTML coding or website design, though, so that's on you.

I meant, like, I want to cut out the middle man and be my own server host, not use GoDaddy.

Yeah, that's the only one I could think of but you have to pay *someone* for the domain name.
