My brother is going an assignment for school where he has to take a stance on a social issue, and he's decided to do abortion. He's come out as being fairly pro-life (significantly more pro-life than I would have expected), and that made me curious as to everyone's stance on it. My brother used strawmen to argue his points so I'm also including the most extreme viewpoints that I can think of ("Abortions are murder!" "Well what if murder isn't that bad?"). Some of the options are too long to fit in the poll thing here, so I'll list them below:
Option one: All egg cells are to be removed from females and sperm cells are to be collected from males regularly so as to ensure that every single sex cell can be used in artificial insemination. Anything that has the potential to create life must create life.
Option two: All contraceptives and abortions are illegal, and people above the age of puberty are legally required to regularly engage in unprotected sexual intercourse.
Option three: All contraceptives and abortions are illegal, but people aren't forced to have sex.
Option four: All abortions are illegal, but contraception is legal (but discouraged).
Option five: Abortions are only legal in the first trimester where the baby can be proven to be caused due to rape or incest, or in cases where the mother's life is threatened.
Option six: Abortions are only legal in the first trimester when the parents can prove that they are unable to provide for the baby.
Option seven: Abortions are only legal in the first trimester, and require doctors consent.
Option eight: Abortions are only legal in the first trimester.
Option nine: Abortions are only legal in the first two trimesters.
Option ten: All abortions are legal.
Option eleven: Tax deductions are given to women to have abortions.
Option twelve: Infanticide is decriminalized if the baby is younger than six months old.
Option thirteen: Infanticide is legal so long as both parents consent and it occurs before the child learns to talk.
Option fourteen: Infanticide is legal so long as both parents consent and it occurs before the child starts forming permanent memories (around the age of 5 or so).
Option fifteen: Infanticide is legal so long as one parent wants it and the child is under 18.
Option sixteen: The above, and also abortions are mandatory.
Option seventeen: The above, and also everyone under 18 is to be rounded up and systematically executed.
Option eighteen: The above, and also all humans are to be killed by automated drones, starting with those able to deactivate the automated drones.
Option nineteen: All multicellular life is to be destroyed in nuclear flames.
Obviously the answer is somewhere in the middle, and I very clearly got very carried away with some of these options. My brother was number five while I'm somewhere around eleven or twelve, but I expect most of you to have views somewhere between my brother and I.
