I'm thinking that I might write a couple short stories here over the next whatever number of months. By short stories I don't mean a 500 word short story, I mean an actual 7,500 to 15,000 word short story. I'm thinking that I'll first write the short story in this old writing contest and if I get nothing here I'll come up with a few ideas myself, but if anyone has any story requests, please request them. |

If you want to be technical; Isn't that the defined length of a novella? I think an 'actual' short story is anything under 7,500.
Edit: Oh la la, I was wrong. Novelette is that length, and novella is one step above/longer.
Anywho, write a fictitious piece loosely based on Ragnarök, so that I can get some inspiration for myself, haha.

Looks like they combined short story and novelette into one category. My info primarily comes from the SFWA foundation and their Nebula Award categories.
However, that also makes me wonder if the categorizations for fiction and nonfiction are different.

Write something that happens in real life (better: something that has happened to you personally or someone you know), but add in magic somehow.
examples of how it could be done
what happened: Two people talk on the phone
+magical element: they can now talk through a magical mirror
what happened: this character's family sucks; no one gets along
+magical context: they don't get along because each person is gifted with a different type of magic
+political +magical contexts: the magic types are pinned against each other again, creating lots of tension between members of different types
what happened: a stalker
+magic: they sent out a spying spell

I haven't forgotten about this. I just started writing the fist story (sorry that it's taking so long). Expect something up by the end of the month, or maybe next month. It's been a while since I've written and I have exams so it may take a while longer.
