The context is irrelevant. Sometimes it might simply be a case of what grade a student's homework is worth, and other times it's what path evolution itself might take. The weather is another example (the forecast is all but fictitious entertainment, in truth - those television knobs speak from their backsides). Perhaps the law that was passed a few years ago had the least predictable turnout of all recent events.
The law, in a few words, is as follows; a person may form a romantic relationship, marriage or civil partnership with another person, no matter whether or not the couple belong to the same race. It was passed as a result of near-endless protests by citizens who wanted racial equality. Oh, it was mad - the streets were flooded with people and their obnoxiously-coloured picket signs, those with wings hurled rocks from above, the racket was dreadful and at the protest's peak there were daily riots in nearly every county. The newspapers became a bulletin for new deaths each day, and families grew afraid to leave their homes.
The prime minister was reluctant at first to discuss with his peers whether or not to allow interracial marriage. He and the rest of Parliament were afraid that to pass such a law would lead to complications such as crossbreed children, who would be severely disabled or infertile. Such people already existed in very sparse numbers due to the existence of unlawful couples, and most of them had health-related issues that cost the country millions to suppress. Nevertheless, the public were relentless with their violence and Britain would become a warground if the government did nothing - so eventually they submitted, to the great delight of the people.
It's been twenty years since that all happened. The riots and violence from two decades ago are almost forgotten now, and more often than not, couples are formed by people from two different races. However, it would be a lie to say that things have worked out for the better.
The prime minister's fears rang true shortly after the passing of the new law, and the population was suddenly flooded with hybrid children. Most crossbreeds that survive birth die shortly after they take their first breath, as their imperfect bodies cannot support life. Only the hybrids who inherit their parents' most useful traits survive. These survivors are physically stronger than the average person and have earned the fear of their peers due to their unique mentality and physical capability.
Once the first generation of hybrids grew up, they started to feel detached from the community as people treated them differently. At school the hybrids were ignored or bullied because of the way that they looked. The adult crossbreeds found it increasingly hard to find jobs as employers turned them down for being 'strange' or 'untrustworthy'. This became such a huge problem that many of these hybrids gathered together to form their own protests against discrimination. The problem with this was that there were so few hybrids campaigning that nobody stepped in to listen - so the hybrids resorted to violence for attention instead.
Frightening hybrid stereotypes emerged after several politicians were murdered, and parents began to shield their children whenever they passed one in the street. Society was being driven back against a wall by the actions of these relentless terrorists, and after a small group of them planted bombs in a busy shopping centre, taking the lives of twenty-three civilians, the government decided that enough was enough. They didn't choose to reverse the law from twenty years ago; instead they employed agents to secretly rid the country of the hybrids and end the terror attacks.
Almost immediately the number of violent assaults by hybrids dropped by about half; those who forgot to cover their tracks were exterminated quickly, and the rest were forced into hiding. Many fled the country to escape the law, but those without the privilege of wealth were left to fend for themselves. Today, most people have ordinary lives, unaware of those who live in the shadows around the corner trying to remain unseen, segregated from society by their own bodies. The hunt is still on. The hybrids, innocent and guilty, are out there and so are their hunters.

In this world, humans are as much of a myth to the people as this world's people are to us. The earth is populated entirely by what we might call refer to as mythical creatures in place of humans. To make things easy for the players, following this paragraph is a dictionary of all creatures unique to this world.
_____
[HUMANOIDS]
These are the creatures that form civilisation. They have human-like qualities and are highly intelligent.
___
[CENTAUR]
Centaurs are creatures with the head, arms and torso of a human and the body of a horse. They're the largest humanoid creature and need large spaces for living and exercising. They have high levels of stamina and can run exceptionally quickly. Due to difficulties regarding shape, it is socially acceptable for centaurs not to wear clothes on the furred part of their body.
[ANGEL]
Angels have the body of a human, a second set of abdominal muscles and a pair of large feathered wings growing from their back. They're not known for their strength, but they are incredibly intelligent and have the power of flight. Unfortunately, other flightless races often envy the angels' wings and try to hack them off out of spite. As a result, there is a large number of angels without wings walking the earth.
[SATYR]
Members of this species resemble humans, but they have the legs, tails, ears and horns of a goat. Satyrs are masters of footwork and often choose careers linked with the performing arts. They're timid in nature but often demonstrate fantastic musical skills. Satyrs often choose not to wear shoes because they like the feeling of the ground beneath their feet. There is another subespecies of satyr that is half deer rather than goat, though these are much rarer.
[FAIRY]
Fairies are usually about half as tall as any other humanoid creature. They're elegant creatures with large, colourful wings that closely resemble those of butterflies. Because of their ability to fly, they are often targets of hate attacks, much like angels. Fairies generally have very good eyesight and hearing and are unable to grow facial hair.
[HOMUNCULUS]
Homunculi are the closest beings to human - they have no distinctive features other than that they are very small and have 'fuzzy' hair on their hands and feet that allow them to climb walls and ceilings. The tallest homunculus on record was 10cm tall and they generally range between 4cm amd 7cm in height. Because of their size, their voices are high-pitched, yet they are surprisingly loud. Homunculi can hear high-frequency sounds. They can also carry around twenty times their own weight.
[MER]
Humanoids with the top half of a human and tail of a fish are called mers. They naturally thrive in water because of their shape and ability to breathe it, but because civilisation is mostly built upon land, most choose to live among the land-dwelling creatures, using a wheelchair to get around as they have no legs. Some mers do, however, remain in the water and there are several undersea hamlets where they have chosen to settle.
[MINOTAUR]
Minotaurs are humans with the head of a cow or bull. Because of the way their jaws and lips are constructed, they cannot speak and must use sign language or writing to communicate. Because of the way they look, minotaurs are generally avoided and in the past they were victims of government-organised mass-murder, meaning that there are only a handful left now. They are also herbivores, though they prefer to be called vegetarians to retain their humanity.
[SPHINX]
These creatures have the body of a lion and the head of a human. Most learn to walk on their hind legs so that they can use their front paws as hands, though because they have no fingers of thumbs they rely heavily on peers for help with tasks that require dexterity. On the contrast, sphinxes excel in speed and intelligence. Some male sphinxes choose to wear their hair like a mane.
[HARPY]
Harpies are skinny humans with bird-like feet and wings instead of arms. Their talons are fairly dexterous so they are often used in place of hands, and to stop their feet from getting dirty they sometimes choose to fly instead of walk. They are often victims of hate attacks due to other races being envious of their ability to fly.
[LAMIA]
Lamia are humanoid beings with the head, arms and torso of a human and the tail of a snake. They are usually fairly skinny and their fingernails grow quite quickly compared to other races. Their teeth are pointed and thus lamia have difficulty eating fruits and vegetables, making meat the biggest part of their diet. Even though they resemble mers, they take offence when compared.
[WEREWOLF]
Werewolves are oddly wolf-like humanoids. They're covered with short fur and have the ears, tail, claws and snout of a wolf (which results in major speech impairment). Because of the way their skeletons are built, they have poor upright posture but can walk on all fours and are known to be the most 'feral' of all races. Werewolves have a strange hormone cycle that causes them to grow very long and thick fur once a month, which sheds after about a week. They look scarily like real wolves during this period and some people are led to believe that they transform into the animals once each month,
[KITSUNE]
Kitsune are humanoids with the ears and tail of an animal, usually a fox, subspecies with dog, cat, wolf and rabbit-like features have been seen as well. They have sharp canine teeth and are usually low in intelligence, but very few kitsune are unkind people. They are known for being quick on their feet.
[NYMPH]
Once called water-fairies, the newly renamed nymphs heavily resemble fairies in their height and the fact that they have pointed ears and cannot grow facial hair. Instead of wings, they have two pairs of wide, flat fins that allow them to travel easily in water, which is thought to be their natural habitat. Like mers, they have gills but they are not restricted when out of water as they boast both a pair of lungs and one of legs. Their fins are too slow and heavy to be used as wings. Some nymphs choose to live underwater with the mers.
___
[BEASTS]
These are the animals that roam the earth either as wild beasts or domesticated pets. They live in harmony with the 'ordinary animals' that live in the wild.
___
[DRAGON]
These reptiles are roughly the same size as a large cat. They can be trained to perform tricks, and are said to bring good luck. The notion that dragons breathe fire is an old wives' tale, similar to cats having nine lives. Dragons can have wings but the breeds that do are rare. They are often kept as pets. Dragons represent the country of Wales.
[UNICORN]
These creatures are similar to horses but have a horn covered with velvet growing from their head, much like the antlers of a deer. They're often farmed for the velvet because the horns grow back quickly and they are docile creatures. Unicorns are Scotland's national symbol.
[PERYTON]
Perytons are deer with the wings of a bird. They have antlers, regardless of gender, and are sometimes ridden by those who cannot fly. Perytons are difficult to find because of how timid they are.
[BASILISK]
Basilisks are huge serpent-like monsters with eyes that glow in the dark due to a light-capturing substance in the iris. They're aggressive creatures that can swallow a horse whole. It is known that they are afraid of chickens, and there is a legend that claims a basilisk's stare can kill a person. This is untrue.
[HYDRA]
These creatures resemble wingless dragons, but when their heads are cut off, two grow back in its place. They are born with one head but most have at least six due to their nature; hydras seem to enjoy fighting large opponents.
[ORTHRUS]
'Orthrus' is the name given to two- or three-headed dogs. There are many different breeds that resemble ordinary dogs and they are known to be intelligent and loyal companions. They make very popular pets. The heads do not always agree with each other, though, and they often get caught up in quarrels.
[NEKOMATA]
Other than the fact that they grow to about the size of a collie dog and have two tails, they are basically the same as an ordinary cat. They make popular pets but normal cats are generally preferred due to their size.
[PHOENIX]
These birds are large and highly intelligent and are almost never kept by humanoids. They have golden, slightly translucent plumage that gives them a fiery glow at dawn and dusk. Like jellyfish, phoenixes are said to regenerate, spending two to four years dormant when it reaches old age to renew its body. Phoenixes who do not eat and gain so much weight that they lose the power of flight cannot survive this phase and shall starve to death in their sleep.
[LEOCAMPUS]
Aquatic animals with the front half of a lion and the tail of a fish. Sometimes called mercats, these beasts are docile but have been seen attacking people unprovoked. Their unpredictable nature led the mers and nymphs to flee the leocampus' breeding grounds and settle elsewhere. They are sometimes seen swimming in British water, and they are England's national symbol.
[HIPPOGRIFF]
Hipppgriffs are giant eagles with the back half of a horse. The quadrupedal animals are less aggressive than animals such as the leocampus, but can still be a danger. Some hippogriffs can be tamed and ridden through the skies. They are the national symbol of the United States, which is where they originate from.
[PTERIPPUS]
When unicorns bred with perytons, fertile offspring were created. Pterippi, animals that are some deer and some horse are rare quadrupedal creatures with the wings of a bird and either the horn of a unicorn or the antlers of a deer. They are sometimes referred to as winged horses, but this term is incorrect. The first pterippus ever observed was given the name Pegasus, and no more have been captured since. Pegasus remains in captivity and is the star attraction of London Zoo.
[JACKALOPE]
Rabbits with the antlers of a deer are called jackalopes. Jackalopes tend to live between fifteen and twenty years, making them popular family pets as opposed to ordinary rabbits, though they interact well with each other so often both species are housed together. They are also farmed for velvet because of how easy they are to rear.
[WILL O' THE WISP]
Strictly speaking, will o' the wisps aren't animals - they're spirit-like beings that glow fiery blue or green and dwell in the darkness, often in cities at night-time. It is said that they live in swarms and form lines to lead people to one of two things: a safe place or their doom.

As a player, your job is to control the actions of either the hybrids, the hybrid hunters or the civilians. The purpose of the character sheet is not only to produce a record of your character(s) but also so that the admins and I may assess your writing ability and creativity. Please note that this doesn't affect your chance of being accepted unless you are ridiculously bad - it's just good to know. Also, make as many characters as you like.
Eikoopmit has administrator powers during this RP due to aiding me in a collab, meaning that he has the right to enforce the rules as he sees fit.
Please abide to the rules as listed below. You will be warned if you don't obey them and kicked if you continue.
[RULES]
1] Mary-Sues/Marty Stus, godmodding, powerplaying and metagaming are all forbidden as per usual in roleplays. Search the terms online if you don't know what they mean; there's no excuse for ignoring this rule.
2] Please be mindful of the setting. The roleplay takes place in the modern world, the only difference from our own being the different races. Also, keep in mind that it's normal in this universe to come across the different races, so don't have your character be all surprised when they come across a real-life fairy. Furthermore, remember that almost no hybrid characters would be above the age of 20 years due to the date that the law was passed. Hybrids born more than two decades ago are very rare.
3] Romance is allowed to an extent, but please be mindful of the Roblox rules. If a moderator asks you to tone it down, do as you are told. Nothing 'steamy' will be tolerated under any circumstances - I don't want to risk having the thread deleted.
4] When creating your characters, please try to keep the number of characters in each race about even, and each player may only have one character that can fly (this rule can be lifted with successful negotiation; if you convince me that you will use it well, you may have another). This is just so we don't have a million winged characters flying around because of how popular the power of flight is. This goes for both purebloods and hybrids.
5] Feel free to make adjustments to the setting if it's logical - for example, homunculi won't be expected to have to live in a normal-sized house, so give them a tiny little village within the town. Use slopes instead of stairs so that people can get up and down with ease (centaurs, lamia, etc). We don't expect for everything in this universe to work in the AU, so there are clearly going to be some differences.
6] Be specific in all areas when writing your character sheet. Roleplays generally turn out better when I know that the players have at least put some thought into their characters' backgrounds and how different situations might provoke a reaction from them. If your character is a hybrid, mention the two races they share traits with in the 'Race' attribute of the sign-up sheet. Hybrids can only have the characteristics of two races (this is because hybrids are sterile and cannot have produce offspring, and also because any more traits would make for an overpowered character).
7] Don't start RPing until your character has been accepted by myself or the admin(s). If it isn't noticed, PM me the character sheet. If your character is denied, try to work out what's wrong with it before you ask either me or Tim. Try and be resourceful and have another go.
8] Use your common sense! Don't be afraid to take risks with your character's actions, place yourself in their situation and try to have fun. Let's make this last for as long as possible.
