"Temporal navigation systems are online," Your coworker says.
"Then check the quantum disentangler," Says another member of the team.
"The quantum disentangler is online," He responds.
"Then check... I don't know, check the bloody power supply if you have to, but this should work."
"The power is... Offline. Crap. How did that happen?"
"Can you activate auxiliary power?"
"I'm working on it already, but it'll take a full twenty minutes."
Great, a twenty-minute delay. Any more delays and the construction project would seem to be something of an oxymoron. After all, you're building a time machine so that you could use time more efficiently and yet there are constant delays.
"Do you know what the cause of the power failure is?" You ask. "It could prove to be a bit of an issue when we publish this in the journals."
"I'll look into it," Says another of the members of the team.
She gets up, out of her chair, and walks over to some of the cables, looking around in there. There are so many wires and cables and so forth that you can barely remember what does what. After ten minutes of the investigation you get a reply.
"Holy crap. The wire was cut."
"Do you mean that it's frayed and torn?" Someone else asks, hoping for clarification.
"No, I mean that it was cut. With a knife. They know that we're here."
You're working in this isolated bunker in this small middle-eastern city for a reason. Ever since you found the secret to time-travel and have been working to construct a functioning prototype, there have been massive protests against it - and death threats. The death threats could be ignored if it weren't for the fact that people have attempted to go through with them in the past.
"Crap..." You mutter under your breath. You draw your pistol from it's holster and point it at the blast doors, noticing that the rest of the team is doing the same with their weaponry. You begin looking for cover as you hear bullets fire outside. Your hired security should be able to stop the terrorists trying to destroy scientific progress, but it's good to be careful for just in case.
After a while the gunfire stops, and you grab the radio to communicate outside. "What's the situation?" You ask, but you get no reply. You ask again, and then once more after that, but to no avail. Then you hear the sounds of an electric drill.
"Be ready..." You mutter under your breath. But time goes by. A minute, then five, then ten and fifteen go by, then the blast doors come down and bullets begin being fired.
There are six members of your team of scientists and four of the terrorists. The first person to die was the one working on the auxillary power. He was the only one who didn't go for cover, as he knew that if something went wrong in the process of what he was doing we could all die.
The next two to die were also members of your team, although one of the terrorists was shot in the leg, with the bullet going through his thigh. More guns were fired, most missing people but instead hitting electronic screens and wires. One of your attackers fell to the ground next, and his injured ally passed out soon later due to blood loss.
Another member of your team was killed by the terrorists, and then another terrorist. There were two of you now and only one of them. Your last remaining ally got up from behind his cover in an attempt to kill the last remaining terrorist, but he missed and was out of ammunition when he tried for a second shot.
The terrorist took the opportunity and quickly fired two rounds. The first one missed him, but the second one went through his throat, killing him instantly. Being alone with an armed terrorist isn't what concerned you most at that moment, though. What concerned you most was that the terminal for temporal navigation was hit.
As your ally took the bullet to the throat, you got up and fired three rounds at the terrorist, killing him. You're the last one left, you realize, as you hear a whirring sound from the machines, see a bright light out of the hallway, and then feel as if you're falling. You hear the room that you're in crash to the ground, see the machinery break in it's entirety, and look outside. The buildings aren't modern - they're probably medieval.
Stepping outside, you look around. The faces that see you are all Greek faces, and they are looking at you with as much confusion as you're looking at them with. They speak to one another in the Greek language, and then you realize what had happened. Your time machine worked.
