You stand at the mouth of the woods, about to enter. If you look behind you, you'll see the road that you followed and, far enough back, the East Gate of the city of Aldfair, where you decided to undertake this mission to begin with. Ah yes, you remember so clearly how this all began, for it is indeed still the beginning.
You, barely a man, left your village seeking glory and adventure, with nothing to your name but the clothes on your back, the weapon at your side and a small handful of coppers. Your father, a former member of the guard of Aldfair and something of a seasoned adventurer himself, trained you in the usage of your weapon before you went off to seek your fame and glory, with nothing to lose but everything to gain.
Upon arriving in the city, you were full of hope and looked for a place to stay. You eventually found a tavern to spend the night in, and decided the next day to find out where to go to get a job. However, upon going out into the city that first day, you quickly found out one fact at every guild hall and mercenary army that you went to apply to - you didn't have enough experience because you didn't have any experience. To get experience you'd need to join the city guard, but for that, you were too knew to the city.
And so you wandered around the city for a small handful of days when, at last, having lost nearly all hope, you found someone willing to hire you. Another young man of roughly your age, but slightly shorter and slightly fatter than you are, was attacked on the way to the city. He was a young merchant who had recently inherited his father's enterprise and was making the trip from Bluewall to Vertton when his caravan was attacked by Orcs. His guards, outnumbered and rather weary from travel anyway, took flight, forcing him to do the same.
He has offered you ten silver coins to head out the East Gate, in the direction of Bluewall, and confront the Orcs who had attacked him. At last, a real job. The next day you returned the key to your room in the inn first thing in the morning (after eating) to walk the ten miles to the enterance to the Greenbark Forest.
Now that you're here, you think about the future. In the immediate future, you'll head into the forest another two miles before taking a right to go to the large rock formation that Gerwin, the merchant, told you he saw the Orcs running towards. He says that he thinks the orcs have a camp of some sort up there and that that's the best guess as to where his caravan of goods is being stored. After that, you'll collect your reward, and then maybe more job opportunities will reveal themselves to you - Indeed, as you have remarked upon earlier, you have nothing to lose now and yet everything to gain.
