Throughout human history, maps of the world have meant many different things and have been used for many different purposes. Sure, most maps that you can think of are based off of geography, but many include distortions to show various things such as population density, GDP, the number of people without access to basic sanitation and even the number of languages in a country. Even more extreme than those include this map which has Jerusalem at the centre of the world, the Hereford Mappa Mundi and a variety of other maps that we simply don't have the cultural context to decode.
The map in the image above is one such map, being a cartographer's depiction of the fantasy universe in which he lives. The map is ostensibly of a circular continent to our eyes, but it is not to be taken literally that way. It is your task to determine what the map portrays. Are "Elkelk" and "Alch Gard" nations? Are they something else? What does the distance between any two places represent? What does the distance from the centre, or the circumference, of the circle represent? What are the rivers and the ocean? You may interpret this map however you choose aside from as a literal interpretation of the geography of the land, with the only stipulations being that it be an original world and that you keep the names the same.
What you write must be at least five hundred words long, in a relatively formal tone and captivating throughout. Winners will be based solely upon my enjoyment of the reading, meaning that if you want an idea as to what "marking scheme" will be employed, just try pandering to me.
The prizes are as follows:
First Place: 2,000 posts
Second Place: 1,000 posts
Third Place: 500 posts
Additionally, I may opt to use the world of the winner of this contest for a roleplay or a story if I find it interesting enough, and if I get permission. I probably won't, but I might.
Winners will be determined the final weekend of this month and announced on the first of May.
