aliens exist and actually have wars with each other, but by the time their armies reach other the distance is so far that the dispute has been settled and their technology far outdated

Chances are the AIs are heavily programmed for their task, if they are at all sapient they would likely be obsessed with it. They would ignore orders to fulfill their task even if safeguards are developed, they would likely find loopholes.
