so i have a pretty good idea of how i want my career to work out right now but right now i've hit a pretty major crossroads; serious advice would be appreciated but i think i'm more writing this out for my own sake than anything else
this general career idea goes something like the title;
top marks in high school with intense academic program
military college (USNA, West Point, The Citadel, Air Force Academy, etc)
minimal amount of years as enlisted
gain officership in whatever branch i had joined while in college (cover them student loans)
be in the military (probably Navy or Army rn) as an officer for however many years
get recruited from a military officer into governmental work (probably secret service) (FBI, CIA, NSA, etc)
get all them connections in there, bolster reputation, etc, etc
run for political office more than likely as legislative branch; more than likely state level --> federal (whichever i can contribute/have the biggest impact with)
be the change i wish to see in the world!! (haha, good luck man)
okay, so now that that's written out, i'll set up the current situation
it has been a dream of mine to go to a military academy, particularly the USNA. it's worth noting that the USNA is HIGHLY competitive (7% acceptance rating). this summer (between junior and senior year) i have applied for a summer program at the academy that greatly increases your chances of getting into the college itself if you're accepted into the summer program. as well as the USNA summer program, i've signed up to be a page in DC for my state's senator. both of these things (the summer program + pageship) are highly competitive and i don't know yet if i'm going to get into either of them. what DOES help is that i have strong connections with a person in my family knowing someone high up that would assist me in achieving both of these. would it be enough to get the pageship and go to the academy? idk.
so i've been exploring alternative options and one of those has been talking to my local army recruiter. after scoring very high on a practice test for the army (ASVAB) and talking to my IB/AP coordinator, she's seemed more interested than before in having me go army. yesterday, i went for a followup meeting after seeing my practice test scores and she really urged me for one pathway in particular; the Split Training Option. as soon as possible i would basically go into the army as Reserve, go to basic training for most of my summer, and have like 1.5/6 years of my Reserve commitment done by the time i'm out of high school. Reserve is pretty minimal commitment; few weekends every few months of training, few weeks in the summer of training, and some other minor things. basically a part-time job (yeah, i would be getting paid for it).
being in Reserve would also make me eligible for the Minuteman Scholarship, which is basically a $40,000 scholarship for 4 years of college as long as you're in Reserve and attend a college that has an ROTC program (which already works for me because i want to go to a military college). i don't know how useful this scholarship would be because i think the army/military already pays for college education if you're training to become an officer. but still, in the instance that for whatever reason some tuition isn't paid, this Minuteman Scholarship would cover it.
now, the downside to this (going Army Reserve) would be the following;
i'd be burning my bridges to all other branches; wouldn't be able to go to the Naval Academy (USNA)
i couldn't do the pageship and the summer program at USNA
i don't know if the Army is the best fit for me out of all the branches
positives;
would help out with my currently lacking extracurricular
build me up athletically, which i'm currently lacking
would heighten my chances to getting into West Point or Citadel
resume builder
IF i were to go army, it would give me a chance early on to connect with others within the army; build connections
IF i were to go army, it would give me better appreciation of the conscripted which would be beneficial to me eventually being an officer
get /some/ money
and due to my recruiter being.. well.. a recruiter she's pushing for an answer pretty much within a month, give or take. i know by the end of this month i'll know if i'm going to the next step for my page thing and idk about the summer program but i imagine the interview process would be coming up. realistically i could prolong this if i told her i would find out about these two things coming up, but in reality i'd only know if i could go to the next tier of the application process.
props if you read all of this.
thoughts, anyone?
