Back in the old days, diplomacy wasn’t anyone’s forte. Not at all, really. Here’s an excerpt from an exchange between the Bigs and the Humans roughly eleven hundred years ago:
“good morrow to you, sir, oversized cousin of the South! We would like to express our most sincere gratitude to thee for taking the time to readeth this letter and respond to t. We, the humans, would like to parley a trade of sorts. In this trade, we shalt giveth thee ten thousand worth of gold coins in exchange for the cities of Madpost and Bluemorrow. What sayeth thee to this proposal?”
This was the response:
“Stick thy talk'st of nothing up thy rampallian, thee son and heir of a mongrel bitch. I knoweth thee wanteth to invade our land and conquer the Kingdom of the Bigs. t won't befall while I am alive, bastard. go, prick thy face, and over-red thy fear, thou lily-liver'd boy.”
As you can see, dear reader, politeness and diplomacy wasn’t very big. It is noted that the messenger who passed these letters had his left hand cut off by the Bigs. Kingdoms remained largely xenophobic and very nationalistic until roughly nine centuries ago, when the first trade agreement-- the Thalyur Agreement-- was signed. The two kingdoms involved in this were the elves and the dwarves. The elves agreed to regularly export luxury resources such as pearls and spices in exchange for strategic resources such as iron and horses from the dwarves. This opened up a world of diplomacy and trade. While trade was already present, it wasn’t that common, and most kingdoms just depended on their own resources. Many agreements followed, such as the Dag Darihm Alliance between the Giants and the Bigs, or the Garuhm War Pact between the Humans and the Dwarves, although that did not end particularly well. In the years, decades, and centuries following, trade and diplomacy spread and was finally accepted.
