“In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.”
It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor of Mankind has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of His inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the vast Imperium of Man for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day so that He may never truly die.
Yet even in His deathless state, the Emperor continues His eternal vigilance. Mighty battle fleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in His name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst His soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the Tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few.
But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat to humanity from aliens, heretics, mutants -- and far, far worse. To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grimdark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

The Milky Way Galaxy is vast- considered to stretch one hundred thousand light years across and twelve thousand light years thick. Millions, possibly billions of planets, both habitable and uninhabitable are contained within its wide girth.
East of the Holiest of Holies, Terra, is Segmentum Ultima- it has the most Imperium owned worlds due simply to its sheer spatial volume and size. It is, however, noted for its particularly violent nature due to the large melting pot of Xenos surrounding the Imperium. Ork empires led by some of the most savage of their race. The rapidly expanding Tau Empire, preaching their heretical teachings everywhere they go. And most frightening of all, the hated Tyranids- devouring all in their path, and they nearly ripped their way through to Holy Terra itself.
If it were not for the staunch and iron will of the Imperium’s finest Adeptus Astartes- the Ultrasmurfsmarines, all of humanity would have surely perished.
A small system lies within Ultima- the Legio system.Three of its five planets are rich in metals vital for the production of Imperial war machines, and is thus rather heavily defended against the sizable Xenos threat in the Segmentum, with Astartes battle barges doing regular patrols of the sector. There is, however, one major flaw with the sector: it’s sun.
The sun (known simply as Proliam), every couple of hundred years, releases a large burst of solar radiation that cuts off all communication from the planets in the system to the rest of the galaxy at large for a period of two months. That period has just ended. And as per Administratum protocols, confirmation of activity is required from each planet. All have answered… bar one; Proliam IV.
Being the largest and most inhabited planet of the system- it’s sudden silence was worrisome. After a full day of attempted communication with the planet- several system ships were sent to investigate. Four days after setting out, several panicked messages were received, some reporting Orks, others Eldar, even a report recording Necrons. The confusion of the situation has attracted the ever watchful eye of the Inquisition, who have decided to take action.
Regiments of guardsmen are called to bear arms, several groups of Inquisitorial Acolytes follow. The Red Talon Space Marine Battle Barge “Fear of Damnation” happened to be patrolling the sector, and is lending its aid also, the aid of the members of the Adeptus Astartes will be surely needed.
But, it looks as if it may be too late for the planet, and if one falls- so may all the others. Will you be the tipping point in the scale that will lead to an Imperium victory? Or will the vile Xenos claim another world in their insatiable lust for expansion?
