A historically accurate nation game that starts in 762. I made the Grape Kingdom in their once as a joke.
( The grapes owned all of the british isles, norway and iceland )

I just looked it up and apparently there's a Crusader Kings II; should I play through the first one first or is the second one more of an update to the mechanics and graphics and whatnot? |

Well they're currently having a sale on the game so good timing. The second one is just more of a update.
Also if you like Crusader kings try Europa Univeriuls, Victora and Hearts of Iron as they were all made by the same person and all are historically accurate nation games just in different eras.
Lastly try out the Vikings they're always a great time
