Ja, ein bisschen. Ich lerne Deutsch. I think "ich studiere Deutsch" makes more sense then "ich lerne Deutsch". I did it off the top of my head. Didn't know what "study" was in German. Both work, though. |

The United States of America is frequently referred to as America in contexts that are both formal and informal. The "United States of" part is only there as a title, like the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" instead of "Britain" or the "Swiss Confederation" instead of "Switzerland". If you bitch about people from the United States of America have to call it the United States, then that means that we'd have to apply that to all these other countries as well. Additionally, I never see any New Zealanders bitch about Australians calling themselves Australia because it's the name of the continent - It seems to be a thing exclusive to the American continents. It's just improper considering North America + South America = America. This is not the case with the aforementioned countries. And I'm pretty sure Australia was a country before it was a continent. Someone could theoretically bring up some bullshit about how it's the Americas, but I really don't want to refute that because I'll get a headache from it. I mean it doesn't generally bother me, and I don't frequently complain about it because it's no big deal, but when we actually take the time to delve into these debates I speak my honest opinion. I don't even care, they're never going to stop calling it America no matter how improper it theoretically may be. These arguments should just end because they go nowhere; It's just to fuel the people who like arguing. |
