oh yeah this is an interest check by the way so please show your interest thanks
Back to the not-so-big banana, it seems. I may or may not intend to make the experience last this time, what with life and all.
Hello, friendos! I'm Jakelad, and that's all you need to know about me. If you don't know or remember who I am, fuck you I'm not about to spill out a complicated introduction any time soon. I remember Tikobe for sure, though. Hi, Tikobe.
With that taken care of, it's time to get the topic of this thread. I'm here to present what little of my own fantasy world I've developed in the form of storytelling, with various paths that can be chosen by you, the very people reading this story!
This world has several races, plenty of settings, and lots of unestablished lore and stuff that will probably share a common theme with your typical high fantasy setting, but I'm sure I'll go into it at some point during the story. It was still fun to create, and I feel pretty satisfied with what I've come up with so far.
Rather than focus primarily on long stories that stretch all the way across the world, I prefer smaller settings and, if possible, shorter stories. I already have a hard enough time coming up with exotic names for people, so I'd rather avoid the whole business of accidentally giving every town, landmark, and potentially the world itself a stupid name.
You'll find details about the races and stories I've come up with in the next couple posts, and once you've finished going over all the details you'll finally be able to venture into the world of magic, dragons, and enchanted drugs through the eyes of one of the characters in this world.
Let's get started, shall we?
RACES
Literally the only piece of lore I've got at the moment, aside from what little you can figure out from the available stories. But that's sort of how things work here. I haven't truly established how everything works until I tell you about it in a story - and that's sort of the way I like to do it.
||| The Common
~Human
An easily recognized, but highly adaptable race known for their civilizations.
In a world such as this, humanity will certainly not be found in any small quantity, with their settlements, kingdoms, and organizations spanning the vast majority of the regions in the continent. While human nature is well known to the readers and requires no explanation, humans in this world have an unusual affinity towards adaptation not seen in other races.
Humans must pick one of up to four available 'subraces' to have as part of their character, gaining unique abilities as a result of their birthplace:
Nomad
| Nomads start with additional stuff during character creation.
The most common race of humans, nomads are often found within the safety of their own civilizations, and are abundant in the southern regions where magic and harsh conditions are far less prevalent than further north. Nomads make up for their lack of racial abilities with the pride they have in their stuff.
Sprylet
| Whenever an ally casts a spell for the first time in a campaign, Sprylet may roll to cast it as well, learning it if they roll high or backfiring it if they roll too low.
One of the two human races that can be found up north, sprylet are generally born to magically experienced parents or places that are rife with magic. It's easy to tell a sprylet from another human by their often vibrant eye colors and their affinity towards learning spells and magical feats of all kinds.
Vherid
| Vherid are immune to many negative status effects and afflictions of a physical nature.
A highly rugged northern race, vherid are only born in places where environmental adversity is known to thrive. Their rough and resilient skin allows them to be quite resistant to sicknesses, magical afflictions, and the kind of harsh weather that would make a normal person reluctant to proceed any further.
Ilfern
| Ilfern start combat with maximum stamina (instead of half), and may still meditate after the first round.
Humans that begin their life below the surface of the world are ilfern, who are well suited to the dark and eerie environments below. Aside from the decidedly inhuman stamina they possess, ilfern have often been noted to have eyes which glow dimly, especially in total darkness.
~Kobold
Adventurous, ever curious, and bold - traits that speak true to their name.
| Kobolds use two dice when rolling, and inflict far greater damage with unarmed strikes.
Known for their rocky fur, fangs, roughly 4 foot stature, and eighty-year lifespan, the bold race belongs to the voyagers and explorers who make their home in many of the mountains and desert regions throughout the world. Kobolds are known for their unusually good (and sometimes unusually bad) luck as well as their abilities in close combat, both of which are certainly quite fitting for a life in the wide world.
Nochse
| Nochse use two dice when rolling, and are greatly resistant to attacks that deal high damage.
Kobolds born under the world are known to go through an unusual change that results in them being tougher and far more difficult to physically buckle. With fur as tough as metal or obsidian, nochse (who are generally still referred to as kobolds) have natural armor that appears to be far stronger than the kind made conventionally.
~Drakir
Taller, wiser, and longer lived - much to the chagrin of the other races.
| Drakir start with additional condition, and regenerate it at a gradual rate.
This uncommon race of dragon-or-lizard-like individuals can be found almost anywhere they want to be found. Towering over the other races with a height of between 6 and 9 feet, drakir can appear quite imposing when first met, but most are virtuous and intelligent fellows who are just as comfortable with a sedate lifestyle as they are with a thrilling one. With a lifespan of around two-hundred years, the average drakir will have quite a bit to say about the world around them when you come across one.
Anfirn
| Anfirn start with additional stamina, and regenerate it at a faster rate.
Like the other two races, drakir are known to adapt in an interesting fashion when born below the surface. If the second pair of horns jutting from their forehead doesn't convince a person of the anfirn's presence, they'll still take note of their inordinate fitness and ability to endure tasks that would tire out an ordinary person quickly.
There's a fourth race. I won't tell you what it is, but meeting them will become a plot point in a later story if we ever get to that.
||| Great Creatures
~Dragons
Their appetite for worldly knowledge and the magical arts is almost insatiable...
With a height that can surpass a man over threefold and a life expectancy that stretches far over a millennium, it is no surprise the ancient and majestic appearance of a dragon is often regarded with as much reverence as they are in the stories often read at a young age. In addition to these traits, dragons also possess a proportional amount of strength and a natural penchant for the art of spellcasting, casting all non-physical abilities from their mouth.
Those who are well aware of the nature of dragons understand their common desire to avoid any direct influence in the affairs of the smaller races, despite the wealth of lore and history they've amassed over centuries.
Interestingly, each dragon is born with a single, unique mark placed around one of their eyes. While this fact seems to bear no significance to those who make their home in Chorral, it is said that each marking is an incredibly important aspect among the many dragons that live in the far northwestern lands, though the place is regarded as hostile and as such has been not been ventured into by even the foolhardiest of outsiders yet.
There is at least one dragon in each of these stories. Some people may ask why, and to that I ask - why the hell not?
~Gryphons
Only the swiftest of beings can hope to match the pace set by these creatures...
Known for their impressive plumage, nimble movements, and sometimes even full mastery over the wind itself, gryphons are a split-second sight to behold as they part the clouds with their pristine wingspan. Each one appears as a bird of prey frontwise and a predatory felid towards the rear, and most are capable of standing over twice as tall as an average person, though they won't live to be much older than one.
The sky is the preferred domain for any gryphon, providing a natural open environment where they can hunt, sleep, and race across the vast world - all with unfathomable ease. If one ever does decide to settle on the surface, however, their mobility and curiosity still provide ample opportunities to sate the unbounded freedom they possess.
Gryphons tend to be nomadic in nature, but those that prefer familiar sights often make their home in the undisturbed mountainous region of Caetrifs. Some of these creatures also live a peaceful life among the dragons and riders who reside in Chorral.
STORIES
Aah, stories - the pride and joy of every writer around.
As the experience unfolds, I'll be sure to keep the readers updated on anything that happens from a single character's point of view, and offer various opportunities to make choices throughout, be they minor or very, very significant.
I'm hoping to improve my writing skills further as I type out these stories, while also providing a great reading experience that'll hold the attention of readers like yourself. It won't be easy, and I definitely won't update very consistently, but I'll be sure to put forth some serious effort in my writing whenever I can!
Anyway, here's the important stuff - the real meat of this thread.
There are three stories laid out below. What I'd like you guys to do is make a very important choice - decide which of these three stories you would like to view as well as make your mark upon throughout the choices made during the story. I'll likely begin with a very long and drawn out prologue before actually proceeding with the story and first choices.
Every story is told from a first-person perspective, and the results of some actions (which you can often see the chances of) are determined using a D20, excluding modifiers but including critical rolls (1s and 20s). After all, that's the kind of stuff that makes these stories fun, isn't it?
UNDERGROUND TOURISM
| The civilizations beneath the ground are home to some very curious inhabitants...
This voyage focuses on a small party of travelers who have spent the last five years of their lives travelling the world, visiting many civilizations and places of interest along the way. The four are nowhere near finished, but they've just recently discovered the next step of their journey.
Well secluded from the common world, the subterranean depths of the realm lie host to civilizations with inhabitants both familiar and unusual, as well as curious amenities and infernal secrets. Foreboding as it may appear from the outside, those who dare to travel the sunless lands will soon marvel at the hidden beauty and diverse activity this place offers.
In essence, this is the perfect place for a great vacation, and most certainly something for the scrapbooks of this voyaging party.
This is a more... casual experience, I'd say. It'll be pretty relevant to some of my future stories, though, and the definition of 'casual' is really dependent on the character you select as well as the actions chosen. It'll be fun, it's been on the bucket list for a while.
Three voyagers, and their point of views, are available in this journey:
David Arisivh - A wealthy young man with few aspirations and even fewer superstitions who's gotten used to tagging along with his friends at this point.
Corilyn - An energetic and ever-curious young girl with a constantly expanding set of intriguing talents. Her sense of empathy has few parallels; basically, everyone loves Corey.
Cenephar - A peerless warrior, formerly part of a fierce blood fighter tribe from the Verdance. His curiosity of the wide world and the need to adapt to it explains his friendship with the others.
There's a lot more I haven't revealed yet, especially in the very prologue of this story, but I think it'll be quite fun to write this one out. Mythical creatures and beings that generally don't exist aboveground may be a theme later into this one, though don't expect anything too original or impressive.
LACHRYMOSE DREAMS
| It's time to find all those negative vibes and put 'em to rest, Dreamers...
When it comes to tasks around the lesser-known areas of the world, the Dreamers have an area of expertise that allows them to deal with problems in ways few others are capable of even considering. Each Dreamer possesses some kind of foresight, mental talent, or other arcane ability that grants them a unique purpose among their peers.
One of the Dreamers is skilled in augury, and she has recently learned of a monstrous hurricane which will destroy every trace of civilization in the quiet swamps known as the Lachramuskeg. Home to several clans, tribes, and colonies, the Muskeg still appears to reek from ancient catastrophes, but the inhabitants continue to live their lives as normal, unaware of the region's history and especially oblivious to their fate at the hands of nature. If disaster cannot be averted, the Dreamers will have to warn everyone before it is too late.
The setting is somber, and the mood quite serious at times, but the Dreamers are a fairly cheerful lot and know how much easier it is to complete even the toughest of tasks with the right attitude.
This task will be carried out from the point-of-view of one of these kobold siblings:
Seshilan - A seasoned Dreamer who has done much to earn the respect of those he works alongside. His attitude, knowledge of worldly lore, and skills in diplomacy and leadership make him a highly appreciated figure among other Dreamers.
Aruna - One of the two Keepers of Chorral and the rider and companion of Fehyr'zue (also a Keeper), among other professions. She works closely alongside dragons, gryphons, and their riders, but her responsibilities and austere manner keep her physically and emotionally distant from even her own brother.
It is possible to play as an entirely different character created by the readers, but I don't recommend it too much if you want to get right into the story and especially if you're interested in the interactions of these particular characters.
There's a diverse cast of veteran Dreamers from various races who will be joining you for this task, numbering an additional five in total, and you'll definitely meet them if you decide to start out with this story.
BLOOD SCRIVENERS
| Why fight monsters or chart the underground when the real fun lies within the heart of underground civilization?
Vincent Altait and Aytireis have garnered somewhat of a reputation in the urban underground as talented private investigators in a setting where such an occupation is rare and difficult to adapt to, having solved various mysteries and matters of intrigue through the use of discretion, clever methods and their unique mastery of blood magic.
This particular story, however, shall begin just before a nineteen year old Vincent and a newly hatched Aytireis meet each other for the first time, developing a blood bond as they do so. As the story progresses, the two will age and grow as Vince reevaluates his true aspirations and Reis adapts to a world where none of her kind have ever been seen before. Together, the duo shall overcome obstacles where few expect them, where few expect them, master the fascinating art of blood magic and intrigue, and uncover something that may forever change Vincent, Aytireis, and the very home they were raised in.
This is a story that takes place over an entire decade. It features potentially clever mystery, curious interactions, and the kind of intrigue you'd expect this to have. It's a good choice, that's for certain.
This story will occasionally switch between the perspectives of these two characters as it is being told (so you don't have to choose):
Vincent Altait - An ilfern raised under the loving eyes of a discreet mother and bold father, Vincent prefers a life of comfort and safety to anything his parents and many of his friends and acquaintances have in store for him. He had been continuing his studies on trades and blood magics until that one fateful day...
Aytireis - A blood dragon who has developed a magical attachment to Vincent upon hatching, and stays by his side at all times. During the decade she spent living in the underground, she had an interesting, if not difficult experience adapting to an urban world where no other dragons seem to exist.
The rest, of course, shall be told in the story... if you're interested enough to try this one.
If you know which story you'd like to see most now, you can use the poll I've created, but make sure to state your choice in a reply as well, because that's what I'll really be looking at. If you have any questions about anything you've read, ask here and I shall answer the best I can.
Back to the not-so-big banana, it seems. I may or may not intend to make the experience last this time, what with life and all.
