You guys are going to be split into two camps upon seeing that title. The first group is going to say "How the hell has it taken you seventeen years to get around to reading that?" while the second group will say "I have never heard of that book". I shall satisfy both questions in this paragraph; if you couldn't care less, feel free to skip it. The reason that it has taken me seventeen years to get around to reading A Princess of Mars is that in this day and age there are simply so many "books that you just have to read" that it's impossible to get through them all without dedicating a large number of months to the task, and that is time that I do not have. Additionally, I was never given a good roadmap as to what books are classics that I have to read by my parents and teachers and so I am figuring it out as I go - for instance, Hamlet by Shakespeare is an essential that I probably have to read, but do I really need to read everything by Shakespeare, including all 150-something of his sonnets? You guys probably know the answer to that, but I do not. As to the second remark, for those of you who have never even heard of A Princess of Mars, it is available in the public domain and it only took me a day to read through the whole thing. I highly recommend reading it, it's a great book. What follows contains a handful of spoilers as well so please read the book before reading the following.
Now, here's my idea - a roleplay where you play as one of the Red Men of Barsoom at war with a tribe of Green Men (or, alternately, you could play as the Green Men at war with the Red Men). Because I doubt that everyone here has read it, and even if we have read A Princess of Mars many of us may not have read the sequels (I'm downloading Gods of Mars right now, no spoiling it for me, please) so I recommend making up our own Red Martian city/cities and our own Green Martian tribe(s) instead of sticking with Helium, Zodanga, Thark and Warhoon. This way we can avoid the risk of accidentally throwing in details incongruous with the books (i.e. if someone forgets that Helium is actually two cities, etc.) while at the same time being free to write our own geography. I think that we may be able to throw in a handful of references here or there to the locations mentioned in the books, but Mars/Barsoom is a large enough planet to be able to fit one or two cities not mentioned in the books.
So, what do you guys think on the topic of a Barsoom roleplay?
