Titus
Chapter I
My back groaned as I began to rise from my lectus. Naked, wearing only my loincloth, I stepped towards my father's slave. "Dress me." I said, and quickly, she gathered my toga and sandals. The slaves had made pancakes and bread with a vat of honey. I took a spoon and caressed the honey onto my bread. It was delicious, and the wine was sweet yet bitter. I have sparring lessons with a pila today with Cicero, an old auxiliary who became a decorated legionnaire. I also have to go to the ludus to chose gladiators from Quintus for the games in Capua. Slowly, I approached the villa in which Cicero was living at. Often on training days, he'd try to kill me before actually killing me. As I opened the door, a pila raced towards me, frantically, I ducked. The pila soared over my head and struck a slave in the neck. The owner marched towards me with two legionnaires. Just then, Cicero came from top of the building with two gladii, killing the legionnaires behind the man. Quickly, going with his gimmick, I unsheathed a dagger and stabbed the man in the stomach. Together, Cicero and I dragged in the four corpses. Cicero laughed, scavenging through their things.
"Titus, do you ever wonder where I get all my gear?" He said, continuing to ruffle through a loculus. I responded with a quick "No." although, the thought had always tugged at my brain. Now I realized that he was the one for all the random disappearances throughout the town.
He glanced at me, then back at the legionnaire's corpse, and then back at me again. He grunted as he stood up, using his knee as support. "Help me throw these men into the sea." First, he grabbed the slave's two legs and told me to grab his arms. Together, we lifted him up into a wagon. We proceeded to load the other two, now naked, bodies into the wagon. We finally made it outside of town with Cicero "convincing" the guards that we were just hauling butchered meat up to a house down by the beach. Halfway there, Cicero stopped at a small cave to get wood for crucifixes. These corpses were to be our target-practice.
Cicero tossed me a pila before I could react. I awkwardly got it into my left hand's grasp. He told me to aim above the head for a headshot, and at the head for a body shot. I throw with all my strength, yet landed just above his pelvis. Naturally, that would send any man without armor to the ground, but it wasn't enough to satisfy Cicero. Before soon, a slave had shook my arm, declaring that it was time to go to the ludus to chose my gladiator.
