Then 100% of the grade would be from the finals, and people would hate that even more. You wouldn't be able to see that you didn't do that well in your Linear Algebra midterm and then ask your professor what you could do better to improve your grade, as by the time that you figure out you're doing poorly it's too late.
In all likelihood stress wouldn't be removed, but just shifted. Finals would encompass the scope of both finals and midterms, so it would take longer to study for and administer them. Instead of a week of stress twice a semester, it's two weeks of stress at the end of the semester (or scaled up accordingly for how much you study). Arguably it could be more than double, as it's been nearly half a year since you learned the things from that first lecture and you could have nearly completely forgotten it by then, whereas you have some semblance of a memory of it for your midterms.
Just be glad that you don't have two years without a test and then a test on two years worth of knowledge like what I had in Singapore. I hadn't really looked at electrolysis in a year and a half when I was tested on it, etc.
Then again, maybe I'm biased against my system because it's the one I went through. I'll update this with my thoughts on college midterms once I start at college.

????? You get other grades than just midterms and finals. Stuff like graded homework, projects, and regular tests also factor into the grade.

Well I just had one insane set of exams a year that my entire grade hangs on. Homework and whatnot is optional and just for practice and doesn't count for the grade. Just tests.

I mean, I haven't started university yet, I was just describing highschool, but I figured it would be mostly the same. Wait, you've graduated already?

I graduate with an associate's at the end of this semester so it's not that surprising of a detail for Duck to have already done so. Well, that being said I have to do more afterwards cause paralegals need to take some special courses in ABA approved schools but you know, whatever.

And on my end it looks like I might be a student for the next ten years.

I don't think that's normal here. I knew that American high-schools put a lot of value in homework for grading purposes, but I had assumed that American colleges were more skewed in favour of tests.

Mmm... That's really something that depends on the professor. I've had classes where 60% of my grade was entirely dependent on my final, and I've had classes where the final was only about 20%. The colleges pretty much give freedom in that regard within pre-established limits set in place by the departments of the colleges.
