So I just learned today that the word "dame" is sometimes an insult. I was, in the past, only familiar with it as a somewhat archaic term referring to a knight's wife or, on rarer occasions, a female knight. I don't think it's a word that I've used very often, but still, it feels weird that it's both an insult and an honorific title.
Another word that I used to get wrong was the word "exceptional". If I'm remembering correctly I used to think that it was an insult (as in "this work is exceptionally bad") or at best meaning mediocre (maybe due to a conflation of exceptional with unexceptional?), and I remember feeling offended once because a teacher I liked called my work exceptional after I put a lot of work into it. It was eventually cleared up for me, but it's still weird, and I still consider a bunch of other synonyms for "good" as being more good than "exceptional" is.
Does anyone else have any similar stories?

This used to happen all of the time (I can't think of specific stories.) But it'd happen more often with pronunciations of words than meanings. Eventualy I decided to either know the word with a doubt, or just not use it at all.

I didn't know dame was used as an insult, but I'm honestly not surprised. Pretty much any word related to being a girl will be used as an insult to some extent or another.
As for exceptional, it just means it's out of the ordinary. Exceptionally bad = This is even worse than the regular amount of bad; exceptionally good (or just exceptional) = exceeds expectations.
