"Don't drink too much. There's bound to be alcohol at the party," Drake warns.
"I'll take your word for it."
"Well, I've some things to sort out, Captain. I'll arrive at the ship soon to change my attire," Kem explains.
"Let me hop along as well, Kem," Drake smiles. "I'm very interested in seeing what a person like you does in their free time."
"Well, then. It looks like it's just you and me, Captain," Miranda states.
"Actually, just you," a scruffy, aged voice says from down the hallway.
The man was a human from well into his 60's. You recognized him: Conner McDowell of Nest Industries. Originally Nest was a producer in robotics, but the success of the Helpers before the Helper Wars allowed it to spread in so many other fields. Sure the Helper Wars was a big hit to business, but the current CEO's father, Noah Nest, who's still the owner even if he doesn't manage it directly, pulled some clever marketing strategies and not only saved the company but essentially restored it to where it was before the Helper Wars began.
Unfortunately, after Noah gave management of the company to his son, rumors of shady things within Nest Industries began. Conner is the current head of Nest's biological research department, and has had a heavily vested interest in technomancers. You got acquainted with him because he came up asking to perform some tests to learn more about technomancers, but you turned him down after hearing some nasty stories about Conner's possible connection to illegal technomancer studying groups.
"You've been promoted to captain, Nikolai?" Conner smiles. "That's great to hear! Would you mind talking about it in some place a little more private?"

I'd turn my head away to face Connor, and then look at my watch. "I have time, sure, why not?"

"Then I'll head over to the ship, Captain," Miranda says as she walks off. She seemed to glare at Conner for a brief second.
Conner leads you down a hallway. It wasn't a pleasant one, but it was empty.
"So, Captain Nikolai, what do you think of your new posting?" Conner says as the two of you walk.
