Intro
Since time immemorial nations, species and individuals have plied the great void of space in pursuit of wealth and glory. Conflict amongst them was and continues to be inevitable, as competing ideologies and goals clash in order to reshape the galaxy in one image. For the past century however, the galaxy has known an unprecedented era of peace. The great alliances of the Coalition and the Khanate have reduced their bloodshed to only small regional conflicts and as a result many fledgling independent nations have been allowed to flourish in the meantime. However this age of prosperity is coming to an end, growing scarcity and the discovery of a new range of hundreds of frontier worlds in the Omari Nebula have brought these entities to the brink of war and threaten to drag everyone else down with them. At the same time, the Cabal has had troubling omens of a dark future and warns of cataclysm in the near future. Amidst the chaos it has become possible for the nations of the galaxy to once again come into interstellar conflict.
Major Organizations
Coalition of Independent Systems
A loose economic and military alliance that has been around for nearly a millennia. The Coalition has served as the center of galactic affairs ever since its formation and continues to be the most formidable and influential political entity in the known galaxy. The Coalition's success is primarily attributed to its tolerance amongst its member states and its pledge to respond with overwhelming force to any encroachment on any of its members. However in practice, the Coalition is rife with politicking and unofficial proxy wars between its various members is not unheard of. In recent times it has become so corrupt that fleets have even turned a blind eye to worlds under siege by Khanate forces in order to advance their own nations goals. And yet the Coalition remains so vast that it will continue to endure for millennia to come, or so they believe.
The Great Khanate
A relatively recent entry formed in response to the Coalition nearly five centuries ago, the Khanate and its members follow a creed of strength trumping all. All nations are ranked according to their military strength with the greatest amongst them becoming the Khan and the de-facto leader of the entire alliance who may direct their military as he sees fit, though in practice it is almost always a request and not a demand. Whilst certainly unattractive on its own, the freewheeling and independent spirit of the Khanate has become a glimmer of sanity to many disgruntled Coalition members who have defected and now contribute their strength against their former allies. Whilst they have been at peace with the Coalition for the past century, the Khanate has never forgotten their original goal of toppling them, which as they continue to decline has become an inevitability. Or so they believe
The Cabal
Predating both the Coalition and the Khanate by countless years, the Cabal is a mysterious organization devoted not to politics but to knowledge. Aboard their massive city-ship the Enlightenment, the greatest minds of the galaxy have gathered anonymously to push the boundaries of sentient knowledge and safe-guard the galaxy at large from esoteric threats. While they command no armies or fleets, when the Cabal speaks they are to be heard and respected for many a crisis has been averted thanks to their wisdom. Whilst technically the Cabal is only a few hundred individuals at any given time, in practice each Cabalist maintains an extensive retinue of acolytes who do their bidding in exchange for technology and one day ascending to the title of Cabalist themselves. With such a gathering of minds, every threat can be perceived and overcome, or so they believe.
Wayfarer's Association
A strictly apolitical organization, the Wayfarer's Association is an entirely profit driven group that is remarkably easy to join. Wealth is the only thing that matters the Wayfarers and so merchants, bounty hunters, mercenaries and all manner of specialists plying their trade become members in order to reap the benefits of vast connections. While the Association itself is apolitical, individual members may still choose to accept jobs based on their own moral compunctions or political agenda. Ultimately however, to be a member of the Wayfarers is to be an agent of the free market which will inevitability lead to wealth and therefore happiness for all, or so they believe.
