Okay, so here's something that's been nagging me for a while. How the fuck do "eye" and "symmetry" rhyme? I never really thought too hard about it until a couple weeks ago when, in English class, my teacher decided to revisit everyone's elementary school teacher's favourite poem as sort of an introduction to the philosophy of William Blake, but now I can't stop thinking about it. Were "eye" or "symmetry" pronounced differently back then?

Possibly? I think sometimes poets just say "Meh, close enough" when it comes to rhymes that are sort of close but not actually rhyming.

Like try and eye rhyme, I guess symmetry and eye rhymed as well.

Like purring said, a lot of poems and songs and the like have some almost-rhymes, that don't quite fit
