You peer out, and much to your dismay, you spot the demon who you stole the gem from, standing over the cold, lifeless form of the wolf that you fought earlier. He seems to be a state of mourning for the creature, saying some things along the lines of; "You were such a good pet." and, "I'll give you a damn fine burial, old friend." It seems despite being a demon, it still cares for other creatures. Still, you'd best keep yourself unseen, lest he blame you for both stealing the gem and killing his pet.

I'll tie together the two cut ends of the strap of my knapsack into a tight knot to enable me to wear it effectively until I can get to... Well, anywhere where Vanarus coins would be accepted without the risk of me being killed in a manner like this, I suppose. Additionally, I pick up and sheathe my sword, and take another glance around to see if I can find where my spear and shield vanished to. If I can see either or both of them I'll pick them up before planning my escape (if they're out of sight of that damn demon), but if I can't see them, or if they're within eyeshot of the demon, I'll have to leave them. Upon doing those two things I'll take another look at my surroundings - if there's a way for me to leave the village without being seen, or, alternately, if there's a better hiding place for me to remain in until the demon goes away.

The demon seems preoccupied with his wolf for the moment, and the now pouring rain should mask some if the noise that would come with digging yourself the rest of the way out, so long as you do so with as little noise as possible. You still don't see your spear and shield went off to, but getting out from under the rubble should give you a better view of your surroundings.

I guess I'll try to quietly dig myself out of this rubble, being as careful as possible to avoid detection. I suddenly remembered the mercenaries I was with earlier and take a quick glance to see if I can see any bodies, be they alive or dead.

You peek about of whatever holes you can, and scan the area for any signs of your mercenary companions. It's hard to tell, as many of them wore garments that would cause them to blend in with the peasantry of the village, but you do notice the the armor of one of the mercenaries lying half covered in mud, its owner charred inside. The part of the village where you fought the beast is strewn with bodies, as you might expect, but beyond that you spot very little from where you are.
You finally finish digging your way out of the rubble, quietly enough to keep the demon from noticing you. With a better view of the situation, you finally see your shield, sitting up against a building, not far from the body of what appears to be the mercenary leader. The demon isn't very close, and likely wouldn't notice if you went for it.

I'll go for it, then, but as sneakily as I can. I'll keep an open eye for anyone who looks to be alive as well.

(Does your shield have a grip, or is it the type that straps around your arm?)

(Does your shield have a grip, or is it the type that straps around your arm?) (A grip. Some people have run tests on the ones that strap to your arm and those are actually more detrimental than helpful, while shields with grips are highly maneuverible in close combat.)

(Alrighty.)
You move slowly and quietly towards your shield. When you're close enough, you snatch it up, and find it largely undamaged, save for a few smalls chips on the very edge of the shield. You peer around as well, taking advantage of your further reaching line of sight to see if you can spot any survivors. Alas, anyone that you spot seems quite dead.
Finally, the rain begins to let up, letting you hear more clearly the sounds of wheezing and heavy breathing coming from the mercenary leader. It appears he is alive after all, but just barely.

Would I be able to get to the mercenary captain without being seen by the demon?

He's only a few feet from where you stand now, so unless you're banging pots and pans while you move over to him, you should be fine.

I'll help him up and then, acting as carefully as possible not to be seen by the demon, try to sneak out of the village, while supporting or carrying the mercenary captain if necessary.

You approach the man, and attempt to pick him up, but he slowly and shakily lifts his hand up to tell you to stop.
"No, lad..." he sputters out "I wo-wont allow you... to slow yourself down... tying to rescue me. I'm already too far g-gone. Reach into my satchel, p-please."
He motions towards the satchel now lying squarely on his stomach

I'll reach into his satchel as he says to do.

You reach into the satchel, and the first thing your hand grips is what feels like rolled up parchment. You pull it out, as would be the next step, and the captain looks at it, and then to you.
"This..."
His breath grows shallower
"Is a... letter to my wife and daughter. It..."
He coughs
"C-contains my last words to them. I beseech you t-to take it to th-them."

"They live in V-vanheim..." My name is... is Hroldson. My wife's name is E-Erika. My little girl is named... Hulda." He chokes out through tears
"Our village is called Mjorsfeld. Thank you, and gods keep you, t-tr-traveler..."
The man takes his last breath, and his body goes cold and limp. his face covered in blood and rain and tears. His eyes are still open, staring up into the heavens, and at the gods who have forsaken him. Your spear is still no where to be found, and time grows short before the demon might stop mourning his demonic pup, and start searching for survivors.

Putting the letter into my knapsack to prevent it from getting wet, I'll make my way out of the burning village, prioritizing not being seen over speed, and both over comfort or ease of travel, if necessary.

You make your way away from the village, avoiding the eye of the demon, who you can hear screaming and tearing apart buildings once you've gotten a decent distance away. You're alone on the road once more, but at least you're on the road, You may take solace that you survived the massacre, and may yet complete your task and win the war for the glory of your homeland. Due to Shinuyama being an island, no matter what direction you walk now, you'll eventually reach the ocean, and hopefully a dock or shipyard with it.

I'll continue walking in the direction in which I was walking previously to the incident that occurred in that village.

You continue down the road, perhaps now with a little more wariness of burning villages. Eventually, the road leads you to a quaint little village, situated on on a hill over-looking a lake. You've been walking for days, camping out on the hard ground, and night is fast approaching once more. This might be your best bet for getting a good nights rest before you hit any of the Shinuyama port cities.

Well, it seems as if I haven't been followed so far, which is always a good thing, so I might as well give this village a try. I'll enter the village and then the cheapest inn I can find.

This village is small, and there is no inn to speak of, nor are there any peasants out and about. However, you do manage to spot one old man out in the fields, putting his farm tools away. It nearly blinds you to look at him, thanks to the position of the setting sun, but he looks friendly enough regardless.

If he's far away, I'll run up to him, flailing my arms about such that he sees me and that I am not holding weapons at the moment.
If he's near, I'll begin speaking. "Hello good sir," I begin, "Is there any place nearby for a lonely traveler to spend the night?"
(Sorry I hadn't replied in so long. I haven't forgotten, I just sometimes get really really suddenly demotivated to roleplay for several days at a time and then I broke out of it by planning a D&D game which occupied lots of my time.)

(No worries.)
You run towards the man, flailing your arms like a maniac, making quite the spectacle of yourself. The farmer stops you just short of tripping over some freshly planted rice.
"Nowhere to stay. Sleep in the barn if ya like."
He points to a barn on the other end of the field.
"If you're smart, though, ya wont stay here too long."
The farmer throws the last of his tools in his shed, then heads back to his house, and all the while the sun is beating down on you.
