"The nuclear bomb took all the fun out of war." -Edward Abbey
[PLOT]
The 24th of May, 1975. The day that the world held its breath, for the day it had been fearing the most had come. Sirens blared throughout the world. Parents hurried their children to safety. People ran, screamed, and cowered. The click of rifles, the crack of bullets, and the stamping of boots was a sound that would soon become common. Angry and bitter over their defeat in the Vietnam War, and afraid that this would spread communism even further, the United States of America and its allies spent the days leading up to the 24th building up their armies and preparing for their crushing attack. The Soviets noticed the sudden spike in NATO military activity, and began to get nervous. They, too, built up their armed forces, fearing an invasion was imminent. They were right. By the 24th, everyone was expecting an attack. Troops were sent to borders, and there was a mass enlistment in the army. Australia had an absolutely massive immigration crisis in the days leading up to the war, leading to chaos at their borders, causing a communist terror attack at the Sydney border crossing, involving a massive shootout. It left thousands dead and a planet scared for their safety. The world was about to change as everyone knew it, and it all rested on the shoulders of everyday men and women. Young or old, volunteers, conscripts, or experienced military idols- without a minute to breathe, they had a gun thrown into their hands and went off to fight for their cause. But it could have been much worse, and it could have been much simpler, yet even more terrible...
Nuclear weapons and Mutually Assured Destruction was what kept the world from complete annihilation where we live. Here, however, the Manhattan Project never happened. In the Second World War, the United States initiated Operation Downfall- the invasion of Japan. They succeeded, but with a terribly high price. Nuclear weapons were never developed. The fight relies on the armed forces, and the armed forces alone. Whether this is better or worse, nobody will get to decide. And the outcome of this war is unpredictable to anyone. Not the United Kingdom, not the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, not France, not the United States. Only time will tell. The men and women fighting are all they can count on. The destruction of one nation, or the destruction of the other. Fight for your definition of a utopia. Fight for the future. Are you a common, yet important footsoldier? Are you a valiant pilot? Are you part of a tireless tank crew? Or perhaps you are a partisan- rising up from the ashes of the nations that have been conquered. Can you break through the forces of your enemy, or will you be overwhelmed and left to die in a muddy hole, far away from your homeland?
Who survives and who dies here?
[SCENARIO]
At this point in time, NATO has attacked East Germany. You are somebody fighting for either side- the Warsaw Pact (the Soviet Union and its allies) or NATO (United Kingdom, United States, etc.). You can even be from a neutral country. Soldiers, tank crews, and pilots are on their way to be briefed by their HRs, partisans are on their way to be briefed by their leaders. The rest is up to you. The tide of war is entirely decided by your actions, and your actions only.. If you perform well in attacking, then you take over a chunk of land. If you don't, then you have to fight to the death, surrender, or retreat- a very dangerous position to be in.
[CLASSES/RANKS]
When the roleplay starts, I'll create a general for both NATO and the Warsaw Pact. The maximum rank you can be at the beginning is a Sergeant or an equivalent to a Sergeant- however, you can rise through these ranks as the roleplay goes on. You gain more privileges as your rank increases, from being able to tell certain people what to do, to operating a radio to call an artillery strike. You increase your rank by performing well in battle, helping your soldiers, general acts of heroism, eliminating a serious threat, etc.
You also get to choose your "class"- that being your job as part of the armed forces. Here is a list of them:
---INFANTRY---
Footsoldier: The typical soldier on the battlefield. While having no specialisation, they are very versatile and able to do incredible damage and crushing blows to the enemy if used right and used with teamwork. Depending on the soldier's country of origin, they will usually be issued with a standard service rifle. However, this does not stop them ranking up and being issued a new weapon or picking up a dropped one. The most common and average, but arguably one of the most effective.
Assault: These people are here to clear out the enemy quickly and efficiently. Armed with assault rifles, submachine guns, and automatic weapons, they are absolutely devastating at close-to-medium range, yet their effectiveness begins to fall at longer range. They are usually seen at the very front of the fight- while absolutely essential for the outcome of the battle, they are probably the most at risk from enemy fire.
Sniper: There's an annoying machine gunner? A high rank that normal people just can't seem to hit? The sniper is usually the one who deals with those problems. They are extremely effective at long range, with their incredibly powerful guns being able to pick off important targets with ease. Their effectiveness falls at short range, however. Most of their weapons are bolt-action, unable to take much enemy fire and vulnerable to surprise attacks. Very important, but an exposed sniper is a dead sniper.
Machine Gunner: These people can change an attack plan the moment they start firing. Able to make an entire objective too dangerous to attack, or able to keep defenders unable to open fire on your attacking forces, these people are dangerous, and they know it. Effective at long and medium range, they can kill a lot of people very quickly with the machine guns they are equipped with. However, hip-firing a machine gun is not a very easy task, and running in with a gun that can overheat if you fire it too much is not usually an effective strategy. While capable of doing damage close-range, they are most effective when they deploy their machine guns at strategic areas to stop the enemy advance or assist in yours. Once you start opening fire, you will also become a very popular target for the enemy, and with constant blind fire towards you, it could hit your gun and jam it.
Sapper: Also known as a Combat Engineer, these are the people who dig the trenches that keep you safe and make the barbed wire stopping the enemy from climbing into it. These are the people who throw that anti-tank grenade and destroy that iron beast, and the people who can cause an objective to be dealt with in seconds with explosives, also keeping your legs attached to your body by minesweeping. These people are usually equipped with standard service rifles as well as the typical engineering gear- satchel charges, anti-tank grenades, drilling tools, barbed wire supplies, minesweeping tools, etc. These are also the only people with access to military engineering vehicles. However, they cannot possibly take all of this into battle, and must choose what to take with them before they fight, the maximum they can carry being 3 or 4 items. They also have one of the biggest responsibilities, are the most susceptible to fatigue, and are at a high risk of being wounded or killed. They cannot carry much ammunition, either. Important, but exhausting.
---AIR FORCE---
Fighter Pilot: What it says on the tin. Depending on your country of origin, your plane will be assigned to you, and you may even be upgraded to an even better plane if you do better in combat- you might even have the opportunity to customise your plane and add victory marks. As a fighter pilot, your main objective is to engage other aircraft, primarily bomber planes. You are also incredibly effective at diving at an angle to rip infantry and tanks to shreds- just make sure you don't dive so far that you can't move back up. Depending on your plane, you are incredibly powerful- especially since, if you eject in time, you can survive if you're shot down. Make sure that doesn't happen, though- shot down in enemy territory, especially without a weapon, is a very dangerous situation to be in. If you're shot down over water, then you'll have to hope you survive until someone comes to rescue you, or hope that you can get to shore. Overall- you're powerful and important, but be careful.
Bomber Pilot: Again, what it says on the tin. Depending on your country of origin, your plane will be assigned to you, and you may even be upgraded to an even better plane if you do better in combat- you might even have the opportunity to customise your plane and add victory marks. As a bomber pilot, your objective is, obviously, ground targets. Pick your targets carefully- you only have so many bombs, and you are not built to do the intense dogfighting that Fighter Pilots do. This does not mean that you are defenceless, however. You will usually have armament on the front of your plane, and, depending on which plane you're driving, you might have a gunner at the back to shoot people on your tail. You have pretty much the same disadvantages as Fighter Pilots- you are susceptible to being shot down, and you have less maneuverability than they do. If you run out of bombs, you need to head back to your base and get some more. Pick your targets carefully, and do some damage.
---TANK CREW---
Tank Commander: You are in full control of your tank, and the crew inside of it. You order your driver where to drive, you order your gunner where to shoot, you order your loader which ammunition to put in. You have pretty much full view of what goes on inside and outside of your tank, but it only becomes extremely clear once you open your hatch and risk exposing yourself to enemy fire. Within groups or completely alone, you can send the enemy into panic and force them to retreat. Be careful, though. While you might feel unstoppable inside a 30-tonne metal pillbox of death, you're not. Engineers with AT grenades and satchel charges are probably your biggest enemy, as well as the odd person with an anti-tank rifle and the landmines that you're about to drive over. Don't forget to deal with other tanks as quickly as possible- if you're caught off-guard, soon you'll be boiling in your steel coffin.
[RULES]
1. The same old stuff- no Godmodding, no Mary/Gary Sues, no super soldiers, etc.
2. You can look at the opposite faction's thread. In fact, you should do that, so that you can interact with people on the other side. However, please don't metagame.
3. Please understand that, if you get killed or if you're forced to retreat, it's part of the roleplay. Both sides will likely suffer the same. If you die, I'll give you a choice between creating a new character and placing them where you were before, as if they were someone already present, or a new character coming in as a reinforcement, or your own personal introduction. Please don't take death as "you're not allowed in this roleplay anymore".
4. While death is common here, if you attack a character played by another person, you can either ask them for Permission To Kill or Permission to Wound. If you don't, I will. If they say no, then they will likely be seriously wounded, have to retreat, move away from their position, or be unaffected, depending on the circumstances.
5. If you think that something can be improved, please, tell me. If you want another class to be added, or you think I've made a mistake somewhere, please tell me and I'll consider it. It's vital so that this roleplay can work.
6. Make your country proud, and have fun.
