PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS THE SIGNUP THREAD, AND CHARACTERS ARE TO BE PUT HERE. THE ROLEPLAY THREAD WILL BE UP AS SOON AS WE HAVE AT LEAST 6 SOLDIERS, AND AT LEAST ONE OF EACH CLASS.
(Warning: This RP's plot may contain spoilers about XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM: Enemy Within, and XCOM DLC: Slingshot.)
Extraterrestrial Combat Unit :: Vigilo Confido
"Delta section report. Delta section...report!" Central Officer Bradford said, worried. XCOM Headquarters was under attack, multiple alien signatures showing coming from all directions. Finally, the lights came on on the monitor. Four soldiers and three base security people were there, waiting for the aliens to come. "Finally! Delta Section - it looks like your emergency generators are back online and... Delta, whatever this attack is, you're right in the crosshairs! We've got perimeter alerts triggering from all sides." The Commander got on the line then. "Commander, it looks like you've got flyers coming in through the cavern near the guard station... Plus you've got a whole wall of heat signatures coming down through the vents in the ceiling above you."
Ten minutes later, it was all over. Five soldiers were dead, one was wounded and probably would not make it, and a dozen base security personnel were in the field, dead or in danger of dying, their weapons hardly up to the task of holding the aliens at bay. Chryssalids were rampant, while Mutons fired their plasma guns from cover, incinerating anything and everything. The auxiliary power banks couldn't be used to open the doors for some time. XCOM HQ was lost. "All nonessential personnel," Bradford began, dreading his own words, "Evacuate the base. This is not a drill. All nonessential personnel, report to the hangar area for evacuation." Switching to another channel, Bradley ordered, "Doctor Shen, activate all Thunder, Goliath, and Lightning units. We need them to cover the evacuation. Doctor Vahlen, get your team..." Bradford paused. The camera showed the labs being... overrun. Several bodies were scattered around the floor, large chunks burned away by plasma weapons. Two base security people were there too, on the ground, parts of their blackened skulls visible. Bradford desperately hoped that Doctor Vahlen had made it.
"Sir," An operator shouted to Bradford, "Intrusion alarms are going off. Delta Section has fallen, and the aliens are in the base proper." Bradford smashed his fist on the desk. "Shut everything down. But before you do, get a status update on Operation Slingshot." "Sir." The operator replied, turning to do the duty. Operation Slingshot, completed a mere week ago, had successfully captured a completely intact alien battleship. "Get all soldiers in the barracks strapped up and ready. Prepare the base destruct sequence."
The remaining soldiers and surviving security personnel fled to the hangar. SHIVs, of the Thunder, Goliath, and Lightning types, held off the aliens to buy time for everyone to evacuate. In groups of twelve, the maximum the Skyranger could lift, base personnel were evacuated to the secret location of the battleship. Bradford arrived just in time to get in with the very last group. With regret, he watched as the Skyranger, along with two interceptor escorts, left the base. A minute later, several large explosions racked the base, collapsing it and scouring it clean of aliens, and any humans that had gotten trapped inside. It was a terrible day for XCOM. But they had to persevere.
-20 years later
Operation Slingshot, now renamed Project Avenger, was complete. In that time, the world had changed. The arrival of the Alien Temple ship, the massed surrender of the world governments, and the creation of the Advent. The organization known as EXALT saw their opportunity, and became subordinates of the aliens, turning into Advent soldiers that walk the streets, enforcing the regime.
XCOM must lurk in the shadows, striking and disappearing. The Avenger, the alien battleship that XCOM captured before it was forced to retreat, serves as a mobile base of operations. The baseline soldiers have morphed into tough guerrilla fighters ready to ambush Advent and alien forces.
The Ranger is the most common, fighters ready to do anything and go anywhere. They wield close and medium range weapons, ready to fight on any ground.
The Grenadier carries, as the name implies, a grenade launcher and acts as the explosives expert.
The Sharpshooter takes opponents down from long range with a sniper rifle, or close in with a pistol.
The Specialist has a drone companion, which can fly around the battlefield to serve as a reconnaissance tool, as well as stunning enemies and healing friendlies.
These are the soldiers of today's battlefields. Not waged in the streets, but in the back alleys. Not in broad daylight, but in the shadows.
-Rules
1: No godmodding, metagaming, powerplaying, or perfect characters. I control the actions of the world, you control yourself.
2: Here, the aliens are more powerful than you. Have more numbers than you. Other humans think of you as villains. It is up to you to make them think of you as heroes. Stealth and superior tactics are required to win. Remember that.
3: To acquire new gear, you have to loot the bodies of fallen allies and enemies. Death will be reasonably common if you are caught unprepared, so I encourage everyone to be prepared to make a new character if necessary.
4: Try to be active. Tell me if you can't post for a while, or ask for a PM of the link if you can't keep track of the thread well.
5: New characters can be accepted at any time, though they won't be able to partake if a mission is currently going on.
6: Put "Earth will be avenged." in the Other section of your CS.
