THE STARTER


The night had been a long one, many hours of binge watching new series on Netflix, cuddling pillows, meowing back at the cat, and countless times of using the bathroom and getting more food or another refill. It seemed like the night wasn't going to end, when the sun began to rise, the rays of light shining into Allen's window and into his eyes, making him hiss like a vampire and quickly close the blinds. His eyes fluttered, and he rubbed the crust from them. He was tired as hell, but, considering he had a job to do, he knew that he couldn't take a 'catnap', as those seemed to last a full millennium before he can wake up again. He heard his alarm clock go off in the other room, and he got up from his state on the couch, leaving behind multiple instances of crumbs, stains, and cat fur.

Going into his bedroom, he grabbed the loud alarm clock, and turned it. Pressing the button on the back, he stopped the ringing and sighed in relief. Taking off his long sleeve turtleneck, he walked to the bathroom and took a quick shower to try to wake himself up. Walking out a couple minutes later, he checked the time and nodded, he still had 30 minutes till work. Walking to the closet, he opened it and grabbed another long sleeved turtleneck, some sweat pants, and his one and only pair of socks, his red socks. Putting them on, he walked to the kitchen and made himself a bowl of cereal. After eating, he washed the spoon and the bowl, and placed them back onto the kitchen table. Walking out of his apartment, he walked to his car and got in. Turning it on, he drove to work.


Parking the car, he got out of it and locked it. Walking into his work place (Junipers Coffee Cafe), he waved to Juniper before getting his apron and putting it on. He was a waiter at Junipers, and he enjoyed the job a lot, even if it didn't pay well, he got to meet new people and make friends. With that, he began the work shift.

In search of free wifi and a way to subdue his constant craving for caffeinated beverages, Kenneth 'Kenny' Grant was a frequent face at Juniper's Coffee Cafe. He would spend hours in the corner booth, fingers pounding furiously against the keyboard of his poor computer. (It was a wonder that more of the keys didn't fall off from the overwhelming pressure.) Assumed jobless, the twenty-five year old showed up three or four times a week, and would usually hang around for almost the entirety of the day. It probably helped that the brunet enjoyed the coffee. Though he actually only needed about one cup of coffee a day in order to avoid crashing, the man was willing to down as many cups as it took to keep his table when the busy hours arrived. Which, as one might have guessed - took a lot of goddamn coffee,

This particular morning wasn't different from any others. The owner of the small shop, Juniper, had let him in even though none of the waiters had officially showed up. Throughout his months of coming here, the two had adopted and unspoken agreement - she would let Kenny in a couple of minutes early, and he would order about thirty dollar's worth of substance to keep him going for the entire day. Oh, and he still had to wait for the first waiter to show up before ordering a cup o' joe. And try to keep his commotion down to minimum levels. Kenny had the tendency to grow stressed over whatever was going on in his screen, used to let his frustrations out through (loud) grunts of exasperation, and vexed curses. Nowadays, the brown-haired fellow was a lot calmer, had to be if he wanted to continue his free mooching of the wireless internet, and he expressed his irritation by combing his fingers through his shortish curly hair.

So when Allen entered the cafe for that particular morning, and got ready for his shift, Kenny's green eyes lit up straightway and he was forced to stifle the urge to grin (which would inevitably leading to drool), near salivating at the prospect of a warm drink.
