couldn't they just buy you? :taunt: So we're using nicknames given to me buy my classmates as an insult now?? You should dump him. Or at least lie and say that for a time you reciprocated his romantic feelings but now you hate him. One or the other, just to rub some salt into the fresh, open wound.

I was taught that it is "airplane," probably the only rule-breaker among its cousins, a few examples being "aerodynamics" and "aeronautics." Never in my life until this day have I ever seen it spelled as "aeroplane." Even SPELLCHECK thinks it's incorrect ... which isn't really saying much, because it also thinks that a few other choice words are incorrect; words of which escape my memory at this time, but it's still fairly relevant.

I was taught that you should memorize however they spell stuff at school because whatever they do at school and whatever the books say is obviously correct, all the time. Really though, this certain difference of spellings (and probably pronunciations, too) doesn't really matter all that much.

Really though, this certain difference of spellings (and probably pronunciations, too) doesn't really matter all that much. I was taught to question things that are inconsistent or that make no sense, especially if I'm supposed to remember it. For instance, if I was given a list of words "telephone", "phonetics", "microphone" and "megafone" and told to memorize them, I would follow how I was taught and ask why for all the other words that relate to sound they have a "ph" and yet "megafone" has an "f" sound. Of course, I purposely misspelt "megaphone" to use as an example, but you can apply this to just about every set of words that have the same etymological origin.

As has been stated before this depends on the country you come from and doesn't really matter. Americans leave out the 'U' in words such as honour and colour and put 'z' in some words but it's hardly their fault since they are brought up to spell these words that way. Even centre and metre are spelt differently. It's not wrong and neither is our way it's the just the way they have been brought up to spell things.
Purring spellcheck does that because you have an American keyboard.

My god, I've been complaining about that as one of my most frequently seen spelling mistakes for months now...
